The Beginning

The story of our engagement really
began with our good friends Sally &
Marija, who celebrated their
commitment in July of 2008, at
Promontory Point on Lake Michigan.
The ceremony was an intimate
gathering of friends and family with
champagne, jazz, brunchy things and
lovely people.  It was fun and romantic
the joy of it all really traveled with us
as we left the reception, immediately
getting on the road to drive several
hours to Deep Creek, MD for our
family vacation with Scot, Kath &
Alexander.
Erin & Brian's Wedding
May 23, 2009

Since we decided to get married in
the Catholic Church, we had to jump
through some hoops with all the
paperwork needed to begin the
Pre-Cana process.

We didn't have a copy of Brian's
baptismal certificate, and none of his
older relatives were quite certain
where or when he had been baptized.
He had to call a lot of churches and
charm a lot of ornery parish
secretaries before it was all over.  In
the process, he got in touch with an
uncle from his mom's side of the
family who he hadn't spoken to or
seen in 20 or so years, and that was
pretty cool.

Another cool thing that came out of
that paperwork search was that I
discovered who
my godfather was,
since he was listed on my baptismal
certificate, and contacted him through
my cousin Anne in Canada who been
working on the family tree for years.
His name is Vince, and he was my
grandfather's brother-in-law.  (I
believe he was chosen to be my
godfather because he was the only
adult Catholic male on my father's
side of the family, and in the sixties,
Catholics always had Catholic
godparents.  We were thrilled to get
back in touch and have him and his
daughter Marion at our wedding.

We e-mailed our
engagement and
Save-the-Date cards,
created a website and
sent out e-vites to our
wedding. Not only was it
an inexpensive, green
way to go, but we
thought it was
appropriate since we
met online.
This is our engagement photo. My
engagement ring belonged to my mother.

Our friend Father George drove down
from Pittsburgh to have dinner with us
one night in Deep Creek. That dinner
was when we started talking
seriously to George about getting
married. A few days later, in Scot's
backyard, Brian asked my brother for
his blessing.  The next time we were
all together in that backyard was the
Sunday MemJam following the
wedding.
